Rambling - April 2009 Report Easter Sunday. Cool, cloudy and damp but at least not actually pouring out of the sky. Sixteen of us gathered to enjoy the fresh air. Our first destination was Upton via the turning at Shovel Spring. We then headed for the footpath that parallels the Dismantled Railway and terminates in Chilton. We paused in Chilton to admire the flowers that bloom near the trailhead and then headed due north on a byway that passes under the A34 and continues on to Harwell. We left this byway at its crossing with the Icknield Way and turned right to cross over Hagbourne Hill, hoping for beautiful views to the north and east. Unfortunately, the low clouds resulted in disappointment. We continued down the hill to Chilton Road and back into Upton. A left turn at the Upton Village Hall took us across the Upton playing fields and the up the steep bank to the Dismantled Railway which we now know as the cycle path to Didcot. We took this to the School Path turnoff and followed School Path through the church yard and back to Upper Cross. A little over 6½-miles in just over two hours.
