Rambling - August 2009 Report

August 9th. Sunny, quite warm but a cool breeze. Eleven of us set out to explore some new territory. For a change, we turned to the east and made our way to the Astons via Tadley, Mill Brook and the stables at Aston Upthorpe Stud. On the way, we found ripe plums of all colours and even a few blackberries. Scrumping was the order of the day.

Leaving the stables, we walked down The Croft to a path marked “No Bicycles” but not otherwise indicated. However, it led neatly to the easterly footpath that we used to reach another path behind the houses and eventually to the bridle path that skirts the base of The Downs. We followed this bridle path to a beautifully cut, very straight footpath that led off south-easterly through a field of ripe wheat and eventually to the rim of Lollingdon Hill, a place that the Village Rambles had never before reached and our most easterly excursion, ever.

We descended to Lollingdon Farm and started our journey home. Due west on the bridle path; a zig-zag through Aston Tirrold; and passed south of Blewburton Hill to reach Blewbury. Continuing west we reached our familiar route home via BSW, to Fieldside and then Church Lane.

This was a little longer walk than advertised(!) at a bit over 9˝-miles but a few rest stops seemed to make it manageable and we covered the distance in 3¾-hours

Won’t you join us for the next ramble in September? We have an excellent guest-leader and the walk won’t be so long!
