Rambling - May 2009 Report May 10th. Sunny and mild; ideal rambling weather - ideal for gardening, too which resulted in only nine ramblers for one of the best rambles of the year. That's the way it is sometimes. We headed to Blewbury via our usual route: Church Path to Fieldside, then south to pass by the old BSW and finally into Blewbury, arriving close to the village hall. Cutting across the common we came to The Cleve (very low on water) and then across the Reading Road to the footpath that continues south, up the hill to the White Shoot Stables. Just beyond the stables life gets interesting because there is a path to the east which has become "permissive" which means that we can now head in this direction without trespassing. The views to the north are superb and quite different from any that we normally encounter. We headed down the grassy hill to reach a normal right-of-way (a byway open to all traffic) just short of Langdon Hill. This byway runs north all the way back to the Reading Road which we crossed to reach Spring Lane in Aston Tirrold. Once in the village we used the first footpath and bridleway to head west past Blewburton Hill to return to Blewbury at Winterbrook Farm. From here we returned to East Hagbourne via our usual alternate route from Blewbury, the one that has earned the name of "the bramble route". In May the nettles are pretty bad, but not as bad as it will be in two or three months! This walk was 9-miles, the limit of what is normally on offer with our village rambles. It took us 3½-hours. Next time will be shorter (promise!). See you then? Next Ramble |
