Rambling - September 2009 Report Sunday 13th September, a slightly cloudy day with a gentle breeze. 15 people (including some new faces) ready for a walk. At this location there is some heavy machinery, ready to do some railway bridge repairs. Due to this the path will be closed to all walkers for up to the next 6 months (so anyone wanting to follow this route will have to wait a while until it is possible). After crossing the railway bridge we turned left and followed the path, past Field Farm, coming out onto the A4130 at Hadden Hill. We crossed the very busy road, and continued along the path on the Eastern edge of the golf course. We then turned left and went down the hill to the B4016, crossing this road we took the path through Ladygrove Farm, across the fields coming out onto the Northern Perimeter road near Hopkins Bridge. We crossed the road and took the footpath through the Ladygrove estate, passing the fishing lakes, and climbing up the large grass mound to get a panoramic view of Didcot and the surrounding area! At Cow Lane bridge we turned left and took the path that runs parallel to the railway line, turning right under the railway and coming out onto Hitchcock Way. We turned left, and after crossing lower Broadway, took the path that runs between Roebuck Court and the Western edge of the Fleet meadow estate (this is the line of the old Didcot, Newbury, Southampton railway line!). We followed this until it came out onto Hagbourne Road, we crossed the road, walked along Bridge Close and then onto Linear Park (still the route of the railway). Following this path we passed the Millennium Wood, straight across at the cross roads, past Butts Piece and into Wilcher Close. Then into the Croft, turning right into Shoe Lane, down to Main Road then right back to Upper Cross. Just over 7 miles in just under 2 3/4 hours. Why not join us for next months! Next Ramble |
