Rambling - March 2010 Report Mothering Sunday (and hardly a mother in sight - well…maybe one or two!) It was mild, dry and very breezy - fine walking weather. A dozen of us set off for points south - to enjoy some spring flowers and the dry conditions underfoot. We headed out on School Path to West Hagbourne and thence south on the footpath to Upton where we picked up the informal path through the playing field, past their Village Hall and on to Prospect Road and finally across the Reading Road to join the Lynch Way. The Lynch Way is a broad track that runs along the east side of the valley that holds the Dismantled Railway with excellent views across the valley and all the way to Hagbourne Hill. As the Lynch Way veers towards Prospect Farm, we took the footpath that turns to the west and connects with another footpath that actually leads into Chilton. We turned left at Place Farm and walked a short distance to turn right at Limetree Farm. We paused at the turning before Limetree Farm to enjoy the myriad of spring flowers that grace that area. The journey home begins on the other side of the aforementioned valley and runs through an area where the footpath is often overgrown. Our thanks to the farmer! At the moment, this area is clear. We soon crossed over the Dismantled Railway on a lovely, old brick span and were amazed to see a substantial stream coursing along the old roadbed of the railway. The footpath leads back to Upton where we climbed to the Sustrans path and returned to East Hagbourne via School Path, Shovel Spring and St, Andrew's. The route was 6.8 miles (according to the back-marker's GPS) and took us just 2˝-hours. Home in time for tea. Will you join us next time? British Summertime will have begun so the ramble will start at the later time of 2:00 p.m. Note the change! Next Ramble |
