For many years, the end of May has been the time for the Scarecrow Trail organised by the Hagbourne Action Group as a fund-raiser for St. Anne’s Hospital in Luili, Tanzania.

As that time approaches, folks are naturally wondering if the trail will take place this year.

The Action Group was torn on this, but the current decision is that lockdown measures DO NOT allow the Scarecrow Trail to go ahead. While lockdown rules do allow us all to leave our homes to exercise, it was felt that some villagers might be alarmed by hundreds of people following the trail over the fortnight.

Frustrated by not being able to go to garden centres? Need new plants? An unmanned pop up stall will be on the drive of 12 Main Road on Saturday 25 April 10am-2pm. If you are clearing space in your flowerbeds and have any plants to swap, just bring them and swap them for something different. That’s it. Simple. All plants are free and should be potted up and labelled. Please observe social distancing.  See East Hagbourne Plant Swap

The impact of the Coronvirus COVID-19 crisis on the ability of all parish councils to hold their statutory meetings has caused the government to remove the need for meetings to be in person. Whilst we await clarification of the change in law, the Parish Council formally resolved at its virtual meeting on 26 March in the interests of public health to approve temporary delegated authority under Section 101, Local Government Act 1972 to transact normal business of the Council to the Proper Officer of the Council (Clerk) Laura Lloyd, acting in consultation with the Chairman and councillors until the ban on public meetings is lifted. This means the Council will use email and virtual meetings to consider strategic issues, with routine and administrative business handled by the Clerk and nominated councillors.    

The cemetery will continue to operate and accept interments at this time.  The Clerk, Laura Lloyd, is the burial authority for the parish and will work with funeral directors (with the guidance of the Chairman of the Cemetery committee) to ensure that any government guidelines relating to COVID-19 restrictions are followed.

A big thank you to everyone who came to the Litter Pick. It was a huge success with so many folk turning up! The sun was shining and the air was fresh.

A special thanks to Laura Lloyd who actually does all the organising and Crispin (via Mish Topping) who, day to day is out there in our village picking up litter. It makes a real difference!

In this difficult time we want to keep our Shop open so that we can continue to provide a vital local amenity. In addition, if you are self-isolating and live in East or West Hagbourne the Shop is offering a delivery service for essential supplies that are normally stocked. Phone Steve/Margaret between 9:00 and 12:00, Monday–Friday, on the Post Office number 811815 and give him/her your order.
