Village Shop News – special delivery service for self-isolators

Image of the bag for life sold at the shop

In this difficult time we want to keep our Shop open so that we can continue to provide a vital local amenity. In addition, if you are self-isolating and live in East or West Hagbourne the Shop is offering a delivery service for essential supplies that are normally stocked. Phone Steve/Margaret between 9:00 and 12:00, Monday–Friday, on the Post Office number 811815 and give him/her your order. Your order will then be delivered in the afternoon and your cash payment collected.

Many of our volunteers are over 70 so we are desperate for some younger volunteers. If you can help please contact Alice on 01235  813393, text her on 07474 937870, or     THANK

Brownies & Guides update

Logo of Brownies

Thank you for all your continued support – we recognise this is a difficult and unsettling time for you, your families and our communities.

You will have seen the UK Government has today announced new measures around Coronavirus (COVID-19) and has advised against all non-essential travel and social contact.

We have taken the decision therefore, to suspend Girlguiding unit meetings with immediate effect. Please contact your girls’ parents to let them know your unit will not be meeting until further notice. We will also email parents tomorrow and provide updates on social media to support you in your own communications.

We realise that this news is upsetting, please do support friends and girls within the Girlguiding community at this time, and those beyond our network. Although we are not meeting face to face, we will remain connected with our amazing community of volunteers and girls across the UK. We will be sharing our ideas as to how girls can continue to enjoy our brilliant programme of activities and badges from home and ways to stay in touch with their unit over the coming days.

Our website will be updated tomorrow and in the coming days to answer questions.

Best wishes

Fun Run update

Sadly in view of the COVID-19 outbreak, we have decided to cancel this year’s Fun Run.

I would like to thank you for offering to help. Hopefully everything will be back to normal next year when hopefully we can ask for your assistance again.

St Andrew’s Church Discussion Day – January 2020

Sunday & weekday services in church

It was good to take time out, to meet together in the Village Hall on a Saturday morning in January. Fr Jason introduced a general discussion on ‘Worshipping together’ and we reflected on Romans 12:1-21.

In the first session we were encouraged to think about some of the roles which people undertake in our weekly services, and Jason challenged us to wonder whether God might be calling us to get involved in a new way: whether simply to sit in the pew, welcome people to services, make coffee or to take part in the service (eg lead intercessions, read a lesson, join the choir, help prepare/serve Holy Communion etc). He offered to arrange training if required, eg for people leading intercessions, preparing/serving Holy Communion.

After a break for coffee and chatting, we considered the worship at St Andrews and there was an opportunity for everyone to share views about different aspects of church services, how we worship, or anything that had particularly inspired us or helped our worship over the last year. Jason asked who would be interested to meet as a group, 3-4 times over the coming year, to talk about regular & special services (eg the monthly Family/All Age service). Historic Footpath Sign Reinstated

Photo of Lower Cross and sign

The Grange Path footpath sign at Lower Cross has been missing for a few months after its wooden post rotted away. This sign dates back to the early 1970s, when East Hagbourne was still part of Berkshire, so while not as venerable as some of the surrounding houses is a part of our history worth looking after.

The sign has been carefully restored, repainted and mounted on a new post in its original position where it will hopefully continue to point towards Berkshire for many years to come

There are at least two other similar signs around the village – can you spot them?
